We don't travel very much and may not even use it in a 5 yr period. However, as we have family in Australia, Europe and England we like to have a valid passport at all times in case of emergencies and need to travel expectantly.

My partner and I got a 5 year passport a few years back to travel to rarotonga, and now we are to do a working holiday in the uk, when we leave we will have to renew our passports even though they have a little less than 2 years left before they expire because the uk requires us to have more than 2 years left on the passport, so we will have to waste extra money renewing a passport with a lot of time left on it! :( 5 years is far to short for young adults wanting to do decent travel.

If the government does extend passport validity back to 10 years does that then mean they will double the price once more??? Been there done that!!!

It’s utterly ridiculous that we pay politicians to find new ways to steal money from us!

I am the same boat with Sue, I only have it valid for piece of mind just incase I need it.

So, if it were reinstated to 10 years, as it should be, would those of us who have recently been ripped off with the 5 year version have the validity increased to 10 years? I doubt it very much somehow

So Carolynne, would you oppose a return to the 10-year passport on those grounds? Seems kind of spiteful. I also have a brand spanking new 5-year passport and I would very much welcome a return to the 10-year one. Mainly for the lower cost per year of validity and convenience of not having to renew as often to maintain a valid passport as mentioned by a few people above.

If we don't want to copy the styles of countries such as Australia, UK, USA, and most OECD Nations,Instead of having a 10 year validity we can increase it to 12 years. I don't mind.

Why stop at 4.5 years (seems rather a strange arbitrary number), why not renew every year. Think of the windfall income there. I'm sure the mindless burocrats can think of some half-convincing justification.

I wonder why nobody opposed to 5-yr-passport when it was implemented some years ago?

It was sneakily imposed on us by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, no one was told until a day before it was introduced, this was so there wouldn't be a rush to get the last of the 10 year passports. No one complained back then because we were told "America will introduce 10 year passports soon" that was in 2005, 8 years later most OECD countries still have 10 year passports, including Australia, the UK and the USA. Canada are upgrading to a 10 year passport in July 2013, NZ should do the same.

Why is it that our government are always trying to squeeze yet another $ out of the " would be - traveller " ?
