Even though New Zealand passports are manufactured by the Canadian Banknote Company, on a 5 year, $100 million dollar contract to the NZ Government, Canada does not yet issue passports with the advanced biometric features that have been included in New Zealand passports since 2005.
In introducing a biometric passport (or e-passport) for the first time, the Canadian government will increase its passport validity from 5 years to 10 years. This follows a similar move by the Chinese Government when they increased passport validity from 5 to 10 years in 2007.
